The Champotón Regional Settlement Survey (CRSS) is an archaeological research project designed to investigate pre-Hispanic settlement in the Río Champotón drainage, in central Campeche. The CRSS is regional in scope, incorporating reconnaissance, settlement survey, and test excavations within ancient communities in the Río Champotón drainage. The project has radically altered our understanding of the pre-Hispanic history of the region, documenting regional political, economic, and ecological transformations over the course of three millennia of human occupation.
